Catalogue compiled by John Davis, 1731, with additions and annotations to 1823. The items in the catalogue are arranged by size, language and subject, with a list of the divisions in fols. iv – v. Many of the annotations refer to exchanges, purchases and sales of books, including major sales:

  1. (fol. 1) “disposed of in 1798 by B(rigg) and A(ndrew) F(ountaine)”
  2. (fol. 155) plays “disposed of (and) restored to the Library – 1813”
  3. (fol. 171a) plays repurchased in 1822 and 1823
  4. (fol. 171b) a bill for thirteen plays bought by Andrew Fountaine from W. Clarke, 29 December 1821.

Abstract

Working catalogue of the library of Sir Andrew Fountaine

Biographical / Historical

Sir Andrew Fountaine (1676-1753) was an art collector of Narford Hall, Norfolk. He became warden of the Royal Mint in 1727 but retired in 1732 or 1733 to spend more time working on his collections at Narford. He never married and died at Narford in 1753.
