Biographical / Historical
Sir Alexander Nicol Anton Waddell DSC KCMG (b 1913) worked as a cadet, British Solomon Islands Protectorate, 1937, then District Officer, 1938 and District Commissioner, 1945. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Australian Navy as lieutenant, 1942-1944, then lieutenant-colonel until 1947. Concurrently, in 1945 he entered the Malayan Civil Service, before taking the post of Administrative Officer, 1946, then Principal Assistant Secretary, 1947-1952, North Borneo. He worked as Colonial Secretary, Gambia, from 1952 and became Chief Secretary, Sierra Leone in 1956. He was Deputy Governor, Sierra Leone, 1958-1960. His final posting was in Sarawak, where he served as Governor and Commander-in-Chief, 1960-1963.
