Biographical / Historical

Richard Addis joined the Overseas Civil Service in 1955 after taking a Law degree and the First Devonshire course at Oxford University (a training course for people entering the Colonial Service). Until 1959 Addis worked in Malaya and went through internal self government, the end of the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960) and "Merdeka". He then transferred to the Gambia and served up river in Mansakonko and Kerewan, and as Commissioner Upper River Division in Basse, before being posted to the Establishment Office in Bathurst. He took part in the first general elections in the territory.
