Abstract
Papers of the Rev. Philip Martin concerning his research into the wreck of The Deutschland in 1875
Biographical / Historical
Rev. Philip Martin (fl. 1961-1981).
The Deutschland was a steamship which sailed as part of the Norddeutscher Lloyd weekly packet service between Bremen and New York. On 6 December 1875 The Deutschland ran aground on Kentish Knock in the mouth of the river Thames. One hundred and fifty-seven passengers, mainly German emigrants, and crew lost their lives. The tragedy inspired Gerard Manley Hopkins to write his poem, 'The Wreck of the Deutschland'.
