  2. papers of Legge and his family, consisting of a copy of a twentieth-century journal kept by Hannah Mary Johnstone before her marriage to Legge, autobiographical notes by Legge, and miscellaneous Legge family papers.

Archive of James Legge

Biographical / Historical

James Legge (1815-1897) was a missionary and sinologist. He was the first Professor of Chinese at Oxford University, 1876-1897. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The papers were given to the Library in 1983 by Miss M.D. Legge after depositing them in 1947.
