Notebook of W.H. Auden (the ‘Wintringham Notebook’), inscribed ‘A Third Garland of Poesy / written by W.H. Auden / November 1923-'. Containing fair and amended fair copies of poems, comprising:

  13. (fols. 49-50) 'The Menhir'
  14. (fols. 51-52) 'The North'

Many pages have been torn (by Auden?) from the notebook, but they do not correspond to the loose leaves in MS. Eng. poet. c. 68. Fols. 4-15, 8-23, 26-27, 29-31, 33-35, 37-41, 45-48, 53-55, 58-64, 67, 69 are stubs.

Versions of ‘Skyreholme Mill’, ‘Autumn’, ‘The plane tree’, ‘Triolet’, ‘The Last Time’, ‘A Winter Evening’, ‘The North’, ‘November at Weybourne’, ‘Envoy’ and ‘The Old Mine’ were published in W.H. Auden, Juvenilia, ed. Katherine Bucknell. Eight poems from the notebook were subsequently published in the W.H. Auden Society Newsletter, 15 Nov 1996, and the Times Literary Supplement, 24 Jan 1997.
