Biographical / Historical

Arthur Ernest Cowley (1861-1931) was a linguist and librarian. A leading scholar of Hebrew and Aramaic, he was appointed assistant sub-librarian at the Bodleian Library in 1896, rising to become Bodley's Librarian from 1919 until 1931.
