Abstract

Letters of condolence to Herbert Henry Asquith on the death of his eldest son, Raymond Asquith (1878-1916), and papers of Anthony Asquith.

Biographical / Historical

Herbert Henry Asquith, first earl of Oxford and Asquith (1852-1928), was a Liberal politician and served as British Prime Minister from 1908 to 1916. He married his first wife, Helen Melland (1854-1891), on 23 August 1877. Together they had five children: Raymond (1878-1916), a barrister who died in the Battle of the Somme, Herbert (1881-1947), Arthur Melland (1883-1939), Violet (1887-1969) and Cyril (1890-1954). Helen died in 1891, and three years later Asquith married Margaret Emma Alice (Margot) Tennant (1864-1945), with whom he had five children. Two survived infancy: Elizabeth (1897-1945), later Princess Elizabeth Bibesco, who would die in wartime Romania, and Anthony (1902-1968), film director and aesthete.
