Abstract
Correspondence and papers of, and concerning, Richard Bethell, 1st Baron Westbury.
Biographical / Historical
Richard Bethell (1800-1873) was a graduate of Wadham College, Oxford. He was called to the bar in 1820 and made queen's counsel in 1840. In 1851 he became MP for Aylesbury and in the same year was appointed vice-chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster. The following year he became solicitor-general and received a knighthood. In 1856 he was made attorney-general and in 1861 he became Lord Chancellor, taking the title Baron Westbury of Westbury in Wiltshire. He was forced to resign in 1865.
