Conditions Governing Access

The project policy was to close interviews until 30 years after the end of the interviewee's service in Hong Kong. A few interviews have a longer closure period by agreement with the interviewee.

Abstract

Transcripts of interviews conducted by Dr Steve Tsang between 1987 and 1993 primarily with senior Hong Kong government administrators and legislators.

Biographical / Historical

The Hong Kong project was begun by Oxford University in November 1986. The intention was to encourage the study of Hong Kong and its people and to secure research materials for such study. An oral history programme was a major element of the project and around 60 mostly retired senior Hong Kong government officials were interviewed by Dr Steve Tsang between 1987 and 1993. The interviews were transcribed and the transcripts and the cassette tapes were lodged in the Bodleian's Commonwealth collections (located in Rhodes House Library until 2014).

Arrangement

The transcripts are arranged alphabetically by interviewee.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The interviews were conducted by Oxford University's Hong Kong Project administered by Rhodes House Library, the Centre for Modern Chinese Studies of Queen Elizabeth House, Wolfson College and St Antony's College.
