Abstract

Papers of the Lewis family, principally Elizabeth, Lady Lewis (1844-1931); her husband Sir George Lewis (1833-1911), and their daughter, Gertrude Elizabeth Lewis (later Burney).

Biographical / Historical

The members of the Lewis family represented in this collection are as follows: Elizabeth, Lady Lewis (1844-1931); her husband Sir George Lewis (1833-1911), 1st baronet and solicitor; and one of their daughters, Gertrude Elizabeth Lewis (later Burney). Details for Sir George Lewis are given in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The papers were given to the Library by Mrs Anne Kindersley and (MSS. Don e. 182, e. 184/1, fols. 5-8) Mrs Miriam Jones through the Friends of the Bodleian, 1996.
