Biographical / Historical

John Donne (1572-1631) was a British poet and Church of England clergyman.

Dame Helen Louise Gardner (1908-1986) was a British literary scholar.

Custodial History

Owned by the Montagu family, Dukes of Manchester (HMC 7: 8th report, app. ii (1881), no. 593).

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Sotheby's, 23 June 1970, lot 267; bought from Martin Breslauer with the aid of contributions from E. S. de Beer, Bodley's American Friends, the Hulme Surplus Fund, the Pilgrim Trust, and the fund administered by the Victoria and Albert Museum, 1970.
