Biographical / Historical

Brigadier Gerald Hilary Cree (1905-1998), CBE (1946), DSO (1945), was educated at Kelly College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned in the West Yorkshire Regiment, 1924 and served in the King's African Rifles, 1931-1936. He saw further service in Palestine, East Africa, Abyssinia, Western Desert, Iraq and Burma, 1938-1945, commanding the 2nd Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, 1942-1944 and the 1st Battalion, 1946-1948. He was Commander, 25th (East African) Infantry Brigade, 1944-1945 and was made Brigadier, 1953. He served as Commander, 127th (East Lancs) Infantry Brigade (TA), 1953-1956, Colonel, The West Yorkshire Regiment, 1956-1957 and Colonel, PWO Regiment of Yorkshire, from 1960 till his retirement in 1970. In 1945 he married Joan Agnes Eden, with whom he had one daughter.
