In 1971 Section X of the British Association for the Advancement of Science established a Committee on Science and Public Affairs. This set up a working party, chaired by Walter Bodmer, on the scientific, social, ethical and legal implications of advances in genetics and biology. It held eight meetings between 1972 and 1973 and its conclusions were published in this book.
