Foreign travel papers, c.1818-c.1878, n.d.
Forty-five volumes and folders of loose papers, 1819-c.1872, comprising 'journals', letters, notes, drawings, plans, copies of inscriptions, foreign language vocabularies, and drafts, relating to Wilkinson's travels abroad, and to his residence in Egypt (1821-33). The manuscripts are arranged chronologically, so that the various manuscripts relating to each journey are grouped together. The 'journals' frequently appear to have been written up later from notes made at the time of the events they describe. Material relating to Wilkinson's research and publications in general, and to academic projects carried out in Egypt, is described separately below.
