Biographical / Historical

The organisation Religion, Science and the Environment (RSE) was run under the auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Istanbul and was overseen by Maria Becket with the assistance of an Executive Committee of international scientists and religious leaders and others, including James Becket.

The RSE grew out of an event celebrating the 900th anniversary of the monastery on the island of Patmos, in 1989, although it was also inspired by Maria Becket's work with Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan. The RSE went on to organise eight floating symposia from 1995-2009, which addressed environmental issues and their relationship to religion in each region through a series of talks, workshops and visits. Politicians, royalty, and journalists from each country were invited to generate maximum impact.

The eight symposia took place on the Aegean Sea, Black Sea, River Danube, Adriatic Sea, Baltic Sea, River Amazon, Arctic Sea, and the Mississippi River. Four other symposia were planned, on the Caspian Sea, River Nile, Lake Victoria and River Ganges, but were cancelled. In 2011, Maria Becket set up Faith, Science and the Environment as a new organisation.
