Biographical / Historical

Maria and James Becket played a significant part in the resistance to the Greek military junta that took power on 21 April 1967. From 1967 to 1974, they were associated with Amnesty International and the European Commission of Human Rights, as well as with clandestine operations and many other smaller anti-junta groups, working from their home in Geneva, Switzerland. Maria Becket was involved in all areas of the campaign, but often in unofficial capacities. Notably, she was involved in organising the escape of political prisoners out of Greece and in organising the case brought by Scandinavian countries to the European Commission for Human Rights for the removal of Greece from the Council of Europe. James Becket visited Greece as a representative of Amnesty International from Dec 1967 to Jan 1968, producing a report on the torture of political prisoners, which was later published as the book Barbarism in Greece in 1970. The Beckets were also involved in more clandestine operations for Greek resistance including weapons smuggling. From 1967 to 1971, Maria Becket was an adviser to the European Commission of Human Rights on Greece, and was also involved in work on Turkey.
