Luke was Dorothy and Thomas's first child, born 20 Dec. 1938 and named after Luke Howard FRS, meteorologist and great-great-grandfather of Thomas. A gifted child, he learned to read, write and type at an early age and liked to enclose his own messages to his father to be sent with his mother's letters.
