Visit to China, Sept.-Oct. 1959
The visit was arranged, through the Britain-China Friendship Association, for Hodgkin to join a delegation to attend celebrations of the tenth anniversary of the People's Republic of China. This was the first of Hodgkin's visits to China. She lectured in Beijing on vitamin B12 and travelled with the delegation round the country. She also renewed acquaintance with Liao Hongying, who had read chemistry at Somerville in the 1930s, and helped her gain permission to visit her family. See also MS. Eng. c. 5670/14 in the main Hodgkin papers; Ferry pp.335-340. Comprises correspondence with J. Needham, Chairman of Britain-China Friendship Association, and invitation, letter of thanks from China
