16mm film: 'For Us To Choose', 1972
The film looks at British society in the 19th century, the harshness of life, and the changes that brought about improvements. Comparisons are made between life in developing countries and modern life in the U.K., highlighting differences in population growth, the average wage and life expectancy. The work of Oxfam volunteers in the U.K. is considered, including collection of 'Pledged Gifts', knitting blankets, Oxfam groups, many of which staff and manage shops, the sale of crafts from developing countries, and the fundraising efforts of young people. Behind all this is the Regional Organiser who encourages and supports groups and sets up shops. Written, produced and directed by Geoffrey Petts, Oxfam Regional Organiser.
