Waters was based at the Chemistry Department, University of Auckland. He spent a sabbatical year in Oxford, 1964-5, when he collaborated with Hodgkin in the study of a vitamin B12 derivative. He returned to Oxford for the second half of 1971. Over the years he sent a number of postdoctoral students to work in Hodgkin's laboratory.
