Vijayan came from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, to do postdoctoral research in Hodgkin's laboratory, 1966-9, working on the crystal structure of insulin. He was accompanied by his wife who was also a scientist. He then returned to Bangalore spending a further period in Oxford, 1976-7
