Maslen came to Oxford from Australia on a Rhodes Scholarship and worked with Hodgkin for his D. Phil, degree. His principal subject for research was the structure of the antibiotic, cephalosporin C. He returned to Australia and made his career at the University of Western Australia, Perth.
