The purpose of SANA, as stated at its inaugural conference (MS. Eng. c. 5688/2), was 'to promote and coordinate the activities of scientists aimed at assisting groups and individuals concerned with halting and reversing the nuclear arms race'.

Hodgkin chaired the opening plenary session of the inaugural conference.
