David Francis Barry was a photographer based in Wisconsin. Between the mid-1870s and 1883 he visited a number of forts throughout the Dakotas and Montana, including Forts Buford, Yates and Assinniboine. He developed a very close relationship with the Sioux, who nicknamed him 'Little Shadow Catcher'. He photographed many of the famous figures of the American plains, including Sitting Bull, George Custer, Rain in the Face, Chief Gall, and Red Cloud.
