Biographical / Historical

Lock & Whitfield were leading Victorian portrait photographers. The company consisted of Samuel Robert Lock, an artist who in the early 1850s was converting talbotype portraits into painted miniatures. In 1856 he partnered with George C. Whitfield, who had recently built a photographic portrait studio in London's Regent Street.
