Biographical / Historical

George Washington Wilson began his career as a portrait miniaturist, before switching to portrait photography in 1852. He shifted to landscape in the 1860s, pioneering a variety of techniques for outdoor photography. By 1864 he claimed to have sold over half a million prints.

Félix Bonfils was active in the Middle East, and was one of the first photographers to produce commericalised images of the Middle East, and one of the first to use a method of colour photography.

The three Abdullah brothers opened a studio in Constantinople in 1858 and photographed scenic views and notable individuals, including Sultans. The studio remained active until 1899.

Whilhelm Hammerschmidt owned a photographic studio in Cairo, known for his photographs of the opening of the Suez Canal and the interior of Saint Sepulchre.

Gabriel Lekegian left an important body of work behind under the name of his studio, "Photographie Artistique G. Lekegian & Cie," though little is known of his life beyond his photography.

Hippolyte Arnoux is known for being one of the first photographers to photograph Egypt and the Suez Canal, but little else is known about his life.

Adelphoi Zangaki, known by their probable initials C. and G. Zangaki, were two brothers of Greek origin, active as photographers in Ottoman Egypt from the 1860s through to the 1890s. They are best known for their photographs of the pyramids and ancient architecture.

Guillaume Berggren was a Swedish photographer who was active in Istanbul.

Pascal Sébah is best known for his photographs of Turkey, Egypt and Greece. He had a studio called Sébah & Joaillier.
