Biographical / Historical

Georges Morache was a French physician and photographer, seconded to the French Legation in Beijing from 1862 to 1866.

Thomas Child was an English photographer who photographed Beijing in the 1870s and 1880s.

Théophile Pirywas an amateur photographer. His main occupation was as Postmaster General of the Imperial Chinese Post Office.

Charles Fredricks was an American photographer thought to have made the first life-sized portrait.

Ernst Ohlmer worked as a professional photographer in China, then became a customs officer.

Custodial History

Purchased from Bruno Tartarin France, 18/08/2000. From the estate of the Devéria family, possibly having belonged to Gabriel Devéria, brother of the photographer and Egyptologist Théodule Devéria.
