Biographical / Historical

H.G. Kaiser was born in Germany in 1864 and emigrated to Alaska in around 1879. He worked as a miner and photographer in Nome. He was hired in 1917 by the Alaska Engineering Commission. He made photographs of indigenous culture, mining, and reindeer farming.

Albert Johnson was born in 1874 in Denmark. He was listed as a photographer on the 1910 US Census for Fairbanks, Alaska, and also on his draft registration card from 1917. Dates on photographs taken by Johnson indicate that he began his work for the A.E.C. in 1916, working in the Fairbanks Division.
