The x-ray analysis of protein crystals began when the first x-ray diffraction photographs of single pepsin crystals were taken by J.D. Bernal in 1934. At this time Hodgkin was working in Cambridge as Bernal's research student, and together they published a note on pepsin (Bibliog. 7, 1934).
