Biographical / Historical
The Western European Union (WEU) was the international organisation tasked with implementing the Treaty of Brussels (1948), a defence agreement among Western European nations during the Cold War. In 2009, the Treaty of Lisbon transferred responsibility for the WEU's mutual defence clause to the European Union and as a result, the Treaty of Brussels was terminated as of 31 March 2010.
