Scripts and related papers, 1936-2009
Scripts for plays, film, television and radio. Comprises both typewritten and handwritten material, often heavily annotated by Alan Bennett and on occasion others, such as the directors. Includes some related papers such as filming schedules and small amounts of correspondence originally found with scripts, plus some early preparatory work that is in note form rather than a full script. Early drafts of scripts have often been written on re-used paper, including printed scripts of other works. Work from the early period and notebooks of ideas have also been included here. Texts of talks given on radio are found here, while texts of talks given in person are found in MS. Bennett 181. Material in this series has been arranged chronologically according to the first time a work was performed or published, with subsequent versions described together. A small number of unpublished or abandoned works are also found in this series, placed roughly according to the date they were being worked on. Scripts for works that have appeared in different formats (film, stage, television etc.) have been kept together, in order to reflect the original order that the archive was received. Some of the original folders were significantly annotated, so these have been retained and can be found at MSS. Bennett 194-6.
