Debentures paid at the Exchequer, 1616-23

 Series

  • How to
    request

Comprises loose dockets, written in Latin, pasted onto paper and bound into three volumes. They are arranged alphabetically by name of recipient, within half yearly terms beginning at Easter and Michaelmas.

Payment upon debenture was grounded on Letters Patent and seems to have been the usual method of ordering the payment of salaries and annuities to royal officials, servants and other dependents. As they were used for regular payments they are much briefer than the orders which were given for specific, stated purposes.
