Comprises:

  1. Miscellaneous minor Colonial Office correspondence, 1895-1900, obviously passed on to Lord Monk Bretton by his predecessor as Chamberlain's private secretary, Lord Ampthill (to whom most of the letters are addressed). Largely about appointments, promotions etc.; a scheme for entertaining Colonial troops in Britain, raising troops in Australia; contradiction of newspaper reports about South Africa; etc., etc. (includes two letters from Balfour and one each from Lansdowne, Dufferin and Ava, and Sir Arthur Bigge, also one memorandum by Chamberlain and many annotations, endorsements etc. by him).
  2. Papers relating to Colonial Office staff matters, 1900
  3. A few minor letters to Monk Bretton and other Colonial Office officials, including two from Sir Francis Knollys and a minute by Lord Ampthill on patronage; 1901-2
  4. Printed communications from the Law Officers to the Colonial Office, 1901, on (i) present legal status of Compensation by the British South Africa Company to the Transvaal for the Jameson Raid; (ii) recognition of overseas dominions in a new royal title.
  5. Two papers about Colonial Office honours, 1902, including a tentative proposal to bestow a peerage upon Sir Wilfrid Laurier.
