Newton became a D.Phil. student in the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology in 1947 with Abraham as his supervisor. They continued to work together until his death in 1969. Much of the early work was concerned with antibiotic peptides such as bacitracin. Later Newton made substantial contributions to the isolation of Penicillin N and Cephalosporin C and the determination of their structures. Correspondence includes:

H.182-H.189: Correspondence and papers regarding career, research, publications, visits, etc. with Abraham and others, 1948-1968.
