Tinbergen explained how the story came to be written: 'While in the hostage camp for two years, I was allowed to write a letter to my family each week. One page in each letter I made into a picture story for my children, in order to keep up some sort of communication with them. In this way Kleew was made'.

The book was published as Kleew in English, as Kliew in Dutch.
