A-Z Subject files, n.d. [c. early-19th to late-20th century]

 Sub-Series

    request

Files on aspects of children's literature, children's culture, publishing, the (antiquarian) book trade, and related subjects relevant to the Opies' work, arranged alphabetically by subject. The files were compiled, mainly from the newspaper cuttings, (printed) ephemera and occasional correspondence and manuscript materials which were transferred to the Bodleian Library with the Opie Collection of Children's Literature in 1988, by library volunteer David Hounslow. Working on these subject files from the 1980s to the early 2000s, Hounslow also added material from other sources, as well as his own articles, bibliographical notes, and lists relating to the history of children's books.

Arrangement

The original alphabetical sequence of the files and the subject titles has been retained. Material relating to individual children's books' titles are filed under the author's name, with the book title noted in brackets, e.g. A.A. Milne ('Winnie-the-Pooh'). Correspondence and other manuscript material found in the files was left in place. Some stray items from the Opie Archive, mainly newspaper cuttings and printed ephemera, were added to the files, where the appropriate place, in 2017.
