Motchane, an old friend of Peierls from 1931, founded the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, Bures-sur-Yvette (IHES). Peierls served on its scientific advisory committee 1963-1974 (see Bird of Passage, p. 316).

Letter 1970 is carbon copy from Peierls to Motchane on the organization and running of IHES.
