This visit had originally been planned for March 1992, to follow a conference organised by the American Physical Society History of Physics Division at Indianapolis, at which Peierls was to deliver a talk. Both visits had to be cancelled because of Peierls's ill-health, but his paper 'Early work on solids, mainly in the thirties' was read for him by D. Pines and was published in Review of Modern Physics, 65 (1993). He was able to fulfill a programme of lectures and visits in November.
