This extended visit, which followed immediately on those to Moscow and Leningrad, had also been planned for 1986 and deferred after Genia Peierls's death.

The main purpose was to deliver the Royal Society Rutherford Memorial Lecture, on 'Rutherford and Bohr', published in Notes and Records of the Royal Society, 42 (1988). See MS. 11619/36/D.97-98 for Peierls's notes and drafts. The visit expanded to include visits and lectures in Bombay, Poona, Bangalore, Mysore and Calcutta; the smog in the last city induced an attack of bronchitis which incapacitated Peierls for a while on his return.

Material comprises correspondence with Royal Society and with colleagues in India, invitations, arrangements, lecture topics, schedules and itineraries, letters of thanks.
