Biographical / Historical
Hildburg Braun née Weber was the youngest child of Rudolf and Hedwig Weber. She was born in 1910 and was also known as 'Zück' or 'Bisam' in the family. She studied languages at Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin and earned her doctorate in French philology in 1934. In the same year, she married Konrad Braun. Because of Konrad Braun's Jewish ancestry, the family was at risk during the Nazi regime and emigrated to the UK in 1938-1939.
Apart from raising her children Thomas (1935-2008), and Christopher (born 1943), and caring for her mother Hedwig Weber and her husband's aunt Josephine Heermann (who had emigrated to the UK in 1946 and 1947 respectively), Hildburg Braun worked at Woodbrooke, the Quaker College in Selly Oak, Birmingham, until her husband's retirement in 1961. At that time the family moved to Jordans in Buckinghamshire and in 1988 Hildburg moved to London where she died in 2004.
