Crouch was a fellow undergraduate and friend of Nicholson's at Hertford College, Oxford. He helped to launch the Oxford University Exploration Club and was its first Treasurer. He died in an aircraft crash at the age of twenty-four; Nicholson wrote an obituary for him.
