Birds of the Western Palearctic (BWP) was an ornithological handbook published by Oxford University Press, produced in nine volumes between 1977 and 1996. Nicholson was the longest-serving member of the editorial board and was, from the beginning, a major influence in the production of the series. He also served on the Board of Birds of the West Palearctic Ltd, resigning in 1989.
