Biographical / Historical

The Independent Commission on the Voting System was established in December 1997 by the Labour government, with the support of the Liberal Democtats, to investigate proportional voting alternatives to the United Kingdom's 'first past the post' (single member plurality) voting system for general elections. The commission had a remit to report within 12 months. It was chaired by Roy Jenkins.
