Item 2: c. 65 letters from Japan, discussing Ravenna case, Canadian sealing schooners, strained relations of Japanese Government and Parliament, Japanese agitation against foreigners, cruising with the British Fleet under Admiral Fremantle, Yokohama races, reception for Franz Ferdinand and visits, including from Louis Fagan, 5 Jan 1893-23 Dec 1893.

Item 3: c. 45 letters from Japan en route to England and then to Siam, discussing British position in the East, journey to England via Canada and Washington and to Siam via Japan, effect of June earthquake; also includes press-cuttings of cricket in Bangkok and photograph of Sir Maurice de Bunsen, 12 Jan 1894-5 Nov 1894.
