Nuneham Courtenay Arboretum, 1957-1971

In his article for Nature, Darlington writes discreetly that 'in 1969 an anonymous benefactor put a third garden at the disposal of the university, the established and now rehabilitated arboretum at Nuneham Courtenay'. His own summary 'History of the Loss and Recovery of Nuneham Courtenay Arboretum' is an outline of events 1962-1970, usefully supplementing gaps in the surviving correspondence and making clear Darlington's leading role in negotiations with the University authorities and with the benefactor. The earliest documents, however, show that he was interested in establishing an arboretum several years earlier (1957-1958), originally on a site adjoining the Cherwell.
