A National Shops Unit was created within the Home Division in 1974 in a consultancy role. It had no direct management responsibility for shops, but offered services including advice on properties and layout and design of shops, and training for staff and volunteers. Leslie Durham was Shop Service Manager, later Shops Trading Adviser.
