English poems in three volumes, written in about 1750-1765, chiefly by M. Tadwell
Made up of three pieces.
English poems in three volumes, the first (fol. 4) containing songs chiefly amorous, the other two (fols. 75, 152) longer poems, poetical epistles, political verses and the like.
The range of dates is 1744-61.
The name of Mary Tadwell occurs on each volume, and that of John Watson Tadwell on the first two; the former seems to have written all as far as fol. 175v; perhaps the latter added the rest.
Each volume has an index, the third being added by Montagu, in 1852.
Specimens of each part are:
- (fol. 12) 'All in the Downs', a song;
- (fol. 76v) 'To mr. Handle after hearing some of his Airs in Semele... 1744', beg. 'Whilst mighty Jove';
- (fol. 87v) 'A Prologue... Dec. 9th, 1745. In the time of the Rebellion in Scotland. At the Theater Royal in Drury Lane...', beg. 'Methinks j see';
- (fol. 156v) 'An Epitaph on the late Rt. Hon. Thomas Winnington, Esq., by Sir C: H: W.', beg. 'Near his paternal seat';
- (fol. 158) 'A poem on the art of Printing', beg. 'Hail sacred Art!';
- (fol. 163v) 'An Acrostick', on Emma Cornwallis.
