Records of the Committee for the Welfare of Africans in Europe, 1940-1962
This part of the collection (H3 / 1-3) consists of letters to the Secretaries and Assistant Secretaries of the Society, with carbon copies of their replies and other relevant papers concerning the needs and well-being of Africans residing in Britain.
Many letters deal with loans from the Society's trust fund or from other funds and societies, either to students or trainees in need or to assist in the repatriation of Africans, particularly immediately after the Second World War. Other letters deal with the Society's attempts to obtain university and college places, training or work for unemployed Africans. Occasionally appeals from West Indians are found among these letters. They are usually arranged under the name of the person for whom the appeal was made.
