Territorial files, 1757-1934
This section of the Anti-Slavery Papers is a collection of papers covering both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to 1941 and arranged according to the territory to which each group of papers refers, or, in a few cases, to the subject matter. Papers dealing with a specific place or subject were placed in a soft file and numbered. The papers within each file have, as far as possible, been arranged in chronological order.
This section falls into two parts. The first part contains nineteenth century papers, numbered G1-G122 and arranged in the following manner:- papers concerned with Africa (G1-G35), the British possessions being listed first; those concerned with America (G36-G88), beginning with British Central America and the West Indies (G36-G78) and followed by South America (G79-G82) and North America (G83-G88); papers dealing with Asia and the Far East (G89-G96); those about Australasia (G97-G101), and those dealing with European matters (G102-G109). Finally there are two groups of nineteenth century papers arranged according to subject matter rather than territory. Of these G114-G118 is concerned with the various nineteenth century conferences and congresses on slavery and therefore closely connected with the volumes at the end of the Anti-Slavery Society's minute books (E2 / 18-20); they are followed by four files of miscellaneous nineteenth century papers.
The number of twentieth century files (the second part of this section) is much greater, but the arrangement according to continents is the same:- Africa (G123-G287), America (G288-G348), Asia and the Far East (G349-G373), Australasia (G374-G399), Europe (G400-G408); these are followed by other twentieth century papers arranged according to subject matter (G409-G422), papers dealing with conferences and congresses (G423-G443), others dealing with the activities of the League of Nations (G444-G481), and miscellanea (G482-G494A).
